The 4th of July is often a day of patriotism, fun, and fireworks. We may have a long list of problems, but there is still much to celebrate about this country.
For one, we have a system that, despite its flaws, allows us to press reset on government every two years.
The reset button, for FL, is clearly the State Senate. If Democrats win back a majority, we will be able to slam the breaks on policies that have been punishing our schools, tainting our waters, and generally making you nauseous about their blatant disregard for average citizens.
More than that, we will be in a position to push more proactively on key proposals designed to improve our schools, ease our traffic, and clean up polluters.
I believe Democrats have the opportunity to not just win the State Senate, but the governor’s mansion and House as well.
Winning the Senate, though, will be way easier. Particularly if we win SD40 in September.
I like many of my Republican colleagues even though I think they’re wrong on so many things. (So. Many. Things.)
To me, patriotism isn’t about agreement on the issues. It’s about valuing the good parts of this country and making an effort to fix the things that need fixing. It means not giving up and turning off.
Tomorrow, have a happy 4th of July. But on the 5th of July, we need to get back to work and take back the Senate.
Be safe with your fireworks. We need your fingers to dial phones and type letters.
