I don’t care if you’re a Republican or Democrat (though you should totally be a Democrat). If you have kids in public school, you should be incredibly pissed.
Whether you have kids or not, you should feel a deep sense of shame at what happened yesterday.
This is a bill that is so bad, superintendents throughout the state and most school boards argued against it.
The bill was passed through the legislature in a manner that prevented debate or alteration. It was negotiated in secret and dropped in at the last second with the clock ticking.
That’s not acceptable… and that’s why we’re organizing.
HB7069 not only takes money away from your kids’ school, but gives it to private profiteers who won’t be teaching your kids. Not just a little money, by the way. I’m talking millions and millions of dollars that were meant for your kids, handed to someone else. Just when public schools need more help, this bill makes it all the more likely that they will be starved of the resources they desperately need to improve.
Make no mistake—it is a wholesale defunding of public schools.
I had previously issued an open letter to Governor Scott which details the problems with the bill.
This is EXACTLY why Flip Florida exists. We can’t allow these kinds of bills to float right through and be jammed down the throats of our residents, to the benefit of a few big donors.
We can’t allow taxpayer dollars to be literally handed over to those who want to privatize education, with almost zero accountability.
The first step in reversing this atrocity of a bill is to win the open seat in SD40, abandoned in April by Republican Frank Artiles (after he went on a racist, bigoted rant).
